My name is Alok Mehta. I am 18 years old, writing this from India.
I don't come from a wealthy lineage, nor do I have a network of venture capitalists in my phonebook. I grew up in an ordinary middle-class Indian family. In a world where frontier artificial intelligence is usually built inside multi-billion-dollar corporate laboratories in Silicon Valley, I am building Cortiqa solo from my desk.
This is the story of why I chose this path, the struggles that shaped me, and what we are building for the future of humanity.
The Reality of the Struggle
Growing up middle class in India teaches you a very specific lesson early in life: nothing is handed to you.
When resources are scarce, society naturally pushes you toward the conventional, predictable path — play it safe, study for predictable exams, and blend into the crowd. Daring to start a business, let alone building sovereign neural language models and foundational voice intelligence, felt almost unreasonable to everyone around me.
There were days filled with intense self-doubt, technical hurdles that felt insurmountable, and the quiet loneliness that comes with solo building. When you have no safety net, every bug feels personal, and every challenge tests your endurance.
Yet, I believe struggle is the greatest teacher a founder can have. When you don't have infinite compute or funding, you are forced to be relentless. You learn to write lean, optimized code. You learn to master architectures like Menothus from scratch. And most importantly, you develop an unbreakable hunger to prove that great things can come from anywhere.
Why I Started Cortiqa
As I watched the AI revolution unfold, I noticed two glaring problems:
- Centralization & Dependency: The entire world was becoming dependent on a handful of centralized foreign API providers. For a nation as vast and ambitious as India, true digital sovereignty requires building our own foundational neural architectures from first principles.
- The Hardware Divide: Frontier AI models were becoming increasingly bloated, requiring massive server farms and expensive subscriptions. Everyday students, independent creators, and developers were being priced out.
I founded Cortiqa on a single core belief: intelligence must be accessible, sovereign, and deeply human.
That belief led us to engineer Falin-300M — a compact, sovereign Small Language Model designed to run locally on ordinary consumer hardware without cloud gatekeepers. And it is the driving force behind Thiva, our upcoming neural speech model aimed at making future human-machine communication as natural and effortless as thought.
Building for Something Greater Than Ourselves
For me, building Cortiqa has never been merely about valuation or commercial metrics. Business is essential for longevity, but the true goal is advancing human capability.
Technology should not replace human creativity; it should amplify it. Whether it is an engineer in a small town writing software with Cordenex CLI, a researcher experimenting with sovereign models, or someone having an intuitive conversation through Sonre, our mission is to build tools that uplift human potential.
If an 18-year-old from an Indian middle-class home can build sovereign neural architectures, then anyone with a computer, curiosity, and relentless discipline can contribute to the future of technology.
A Message to Young Builders
If you are a young builder reading this — sitting in a small room, wondering if your ambitions are too grand or your background too modest — here is what I want you to remember:
- Resource constraints are a feature, not a bug: They force you to think with clarity and execute with obsession.
- You don't need permission to build: The internet is the greatest equalizer in human history. You don't need a prestigious pedigree to read research papers, train models, and write software that matters.
- Never let struggle make you bitter: Let it make you focused.
