Modern frontier models are engaged in an arms race of raw context length: 128K, 1M, and even 2M token windows. The prevailing intuition is simple: if you can fit an entire repository, book, or chat history into a single prompt, your AI agent will never forget anything.
In practice, anyone who has deployed autonomous coding agents or long-running conversational assistants knows this intuition is deeply flawed.
Despite million-token windows, AI systems today suffer from a silent, pervasive failure mode: Conversational Context Drift.
The Illusion of the Infinite Context Window
When a developer or user converses with an assistant across dozens of turns — or when an autonomous agent executes a multi-step refactor across 40 files — raw token dumping creates three fundamental bottlenecks:
- Attention Dilution ("Lost in the Middle"): Softmax attention mechanisms distribute probability weights across every token. As sequence length $N$ grows, the signal-to-noise ratio degrades. Critical user constraints established in Turn 2 ("Always use TypeScript strict mode without any") get drowned out by thousands of tokens of intermediate compiler logs.
- Quadratic KV Cache Growth & Latency Inflation: Large context windows demand enormous GPU VRAM for the Key-Value (KV) cache. Time-to-First-Token (TTFT) skyrockets from 80ms to over 2.5 seconds, completely destroying conversational flow.
- Semantic Incoherence & Hallucination Cascades: When earlier contradictory statements or deprecated code patterns remain in raw context, the language model begins blending outdated assumptions with new goals, creating catastrophic hallucinations.
Brute-force context expansion treats memory as a flat text file. Human memory, by contrast, is dynamic, hierarchical, and episodic.
Hierarchical Semantic State Tracking (HSST)
At Cortiqa, our research into sovereign foundational architectures led us to design Hierarchical Semantic State Tracking (HSST) — the architectural paradigm powering Kricko and our Cordenex CLI.
Instead of treating the conversation as a monotonically growing token buffer, HSST deconstructs interaction into three decoupled layers:
1. The Working Context Buffer (Ephemeral)
This layer captures immediate dialogue turns (the last 4–8 interactions). It operates in ultra-low latency, running on Groq LPU infrastructure and optimized PyTorch kernels with extreme Grouped Query Attention (GQA).
2. The Semantic Entity & Constraint Graph (Active State)
As the dialogue progresses, background state extractors parse out persistent entities, immutable user preferences, active project boundaries, and completed subgoals.
- If a user specifies their backend database is PostgreSQL with pgvector, that fact is isolated into a structured state node.
- It does not need to be repeated in raw dialogue tokens for the model to adhere to it 50 turns later.
3. Episodic Vector Embeddings with Salience Decay (Long-Term Archive)
Historical interactions are compressed into episodic narrative vectors. Crucially, Cortiqa utilizes an adaptive salience decay function:
- High-intent decisions (e.g., architectural choices, explicit user corrections) receive near-permanent retention weights.
- Transient chatter or intermediate debugging outputs decay naturally, freeing attention heads to focus exclusively on active objectives.

Real-World Impact: Kricko & Cordenex CLI
Applying this architecture yields profound real-world benefits across our ecosystem:
1. Kricko: Conversations That Never Break
In Kricko, conversations feel continuous and organic. You can return to a chat session days later, switch topics, and seamlessly refer back to nuances mentioned hours ago without the model losing track or hallucinating previous context.
2. Cordenex CLI: Autonomous Terminal Workflows
When an autonomous agent in Cordenex is tasked with diagnosing a failing test suite, it doesn't dump thousands of lines of terminal stack traces into its context window. It extracts the failing invariant, cross-references its semantic dependency graph, patches the culprit module, and verifies the build — maintaining razor-sharp focus and sub-second token velocity.
Sovereign AI & On-Device Autonomy
Perhaps the most exciting dimension of persistent semantic state tracking is its synergy with Small Language Models like our sovereign Falin-300M.
Frontier 100B+ models require vast cloud datacenters simply to manage oversized context windows. By decoupling persistent state from raw sequence length, a 300M or 1B parameter model operating on edge devices can exhibit better long-term task coherence than a 70B model with a bloated, chaotic context buffer.
As we continue expanding Cortiqa's foundational research, we believe the future of AI belongs not to systems with the biggest context windows, but to models with the deepest, most disciplined memory architectures.
